Circumference by Working Men’s Club

by Lana Fleischli

Working Men’s Club just released their newest single titled “Circumference” in anticipation of their new album out in July via Heavenly Recordings titled Fear Fear. When I listened to  “Circumference,” I was immediately taken to the land of New Order and Nation of Language. The synths and ominous dark voice is a recipe for nostalgia and at the same time, a hopeful future. While it is reminiscent of music of the 80’s, there is so much that pushes it into the future. Lead singer Syd Minsky-Sargeant uses the depth of his voice to make the song incredibly haunting. It doesn’t sound like a ballad– it’s not loud in that sense– but it pulls the listener in because it feels so heavy and painful.

The music is inclusive. What I mean by that is that when I listened to the track, I could easily imagine an active crowd cheering and dancing. On top of that, the heavy beats remind me of hands clapping. The hands clapping brings more of a communal energy to the song.

The instrumentals are a juxtaposed mix of slow piano synth chords, and an upbeat, fiery synth sound. The quickness of the song balances out the deep darkness.

Working Men’s Club is preparing the world for their next album and “Circumference” is a great way to start! Looking forward to what is next!
